ABSTRACT
Tobacco consumption in the perinatal period is a major public health issue. It is a major risk factor for a negative pregnancy and childbirth complications outcome and adversely affects the mother and the newborn’s health, consequently there are many cases where hospitalization in the NICU is inevitable. Secondhand and thirdhand smoking exposure regarding children deprives them of their human rights of their health and well-being. For this reason, it is imperative to append services of smoking cessation in perinatal care. The establishment of intervention groups for smoking cessation by healthcare providers highly trained in such interventions and the participation of the smoker mother, but also of the smoker father in them, are the means to ensure their own health and additionally that of their descendants. This results in reducing hospitalization in NICU and keeping the household environment smoke free.
